What I Do
About Robbie Carman
My life as a colorist began not in a post-production facility, but behind a mixing board. I learned to play the piano when I was 4, after that followed sax, trombone, guitar, bass, drums, and a plethora of other instruments. As a teenager, I realized I probably wasn’t going to be a rockstar but I could help rockstars! I dove deep into the recording arts and sciences building a sophisticated (at the time) home project studio.
Later in my first year of college as I sat behind a massive SSL console mixing (or trying to!) a band, the lead singer held up a Hi-8 camcorder (not digital 8) and asked me if I knew how to edit a music video. This one interaction set my career path for the next 25 years but it also did something else – introduced me to a professor who would instill in me a lifelong love of learning, teaching, and education.
As a colorist I pride myself on being ahead of the technology curve, delivering value to clients with a good amount of OCD to get their projects as perfect as possible. I’ve been lucky to have run a thriving post facility for almost 20 years.
As an educator, I take pride in my ability to explain and breakdown complex. In this role, I’ve traveled the world speaking, training, and helping people of all skill levels, I’ve written numerous books, produced hundreds of hours of video content.
For nearly a decade I was a co-founder & a managing partner of Mixing Light. In late 2021, I stepped down from these roles so I could pursue new creative & business challenges including completing my MBA.
