Day 14: 25 Insights in 25 Days Holiday Marathon
Episode 18: From The Mailbag
Encoding For YouTube/Vimeo & Using An SSD As A Render Cache Drive
In this edition of From The Mailbag, we get back to member questions and some good ones too!
First up, we get asked about how we grade when the output will hit YouTube & Vimeo and then we discuss when using an SSD for Resolve’s Render Cache is appropriate.
Remember, if you have questions that you’d like to get an opinion on please use the contact form. Your questions can be aesthetic, technical or even client related. We’d love to hear from you, and your question might make future episodes of From The Mailbag.
Making Files For Video Sharing Services
If you’re like most colorists, the projects you grade will at some point, end up on video sharing services like YouTube or Vimeo.
Both of these popular services seem like they’d be the same – H264 encoded files that match your reference monitor. Well, that’s not the reality of the situation.
In Part 1 of this From The MailBag, we dive into a question from member Margus Voll about how we handle encoding content that’s bound for these outlets, and some of the strategies might surprise you.
While there is no magic bullet, each service has its own particular look to which you must pay attention.
From lifting black levels to neutralizing the magenta push that Vimeo can cause, we cover how to grade projects for these popular video sharing services.
Using A Separate Drive For Resolve Render Cache
Next up, we get a question from member Pat Taylor about using the PCI-E SSD in his new Mac Pro and if that’s a good idea.
PCI-E SSDs are the bleeding edge of storage solutions and well – very, very fast.
We discuss general media management, drive speed and best practices for the render cache.
Enjoy the Mail Bag! Happy Holidays!
