From The MailBag Episode 82

Getting Back To ‘Normal’ Or Are Remote Workflows Here To Stay?

The past three months have been hard, but we hope you’re continuing to stay safe and healthy.

Production and Post have been at best on pause, at worst, unknown, and maybe even disappearing in places.

Does the global pandemic mean that creatives/operators getting back to their studios and workspaces is still months off?

Is ‘work from home’ good enough? Or is there something on the horizon from a technology and workflow perspective that will make remote workflows the new standard and much easier than they are currently?

In this installment of From The Mailbag, Dan, Pat, & Robbie are joined by Mixing Light contributor Joey D’Anna to discuss the state of affairs for our industry in the era of Covid-19.

Safety & Uncertainty

Many locations around the world are opening back up. However, as governments (federal, state, and local) employ policies for all, for a transition back to normalcy, there is still hesitation – both on the part of clients and of facility employees in our industry.

Up first, we discuss this state of anxiety, how many companies and locations might not be back to business as usual until there are better therapies and/or a vaccine to combat Covid-19 and on a 50k foot level, what might be driving this.

We also explore how working from home might be an advantageous thing for larger companies and maybe not.

Interesting Problems With Remote Workflows & WFH

As our discussion continues in this Mailbag, an interesting aspect that’s discussed is if remote workflows are to continue, who pays for it all?

Are facilities going to put hardware in an operators’ house?  Are they going to pay for construction for building out more capable suites? What about Internet? Are facilities going to require people to come to the office on some sort of modified schedule to mitigate liability and dangers for employees?

Also very important, we discuss the idea of content security and how it might, should & could work in the new work from home reality.
