Adobe Updates Its Dedicated Grading Application
I’ve been a big fan of SpeedGrade ever since it was acquired by Adobe a few years ago. However, I know a lot of people that have said Adobe hasn’t been doing enough to make SpeedGrade more capable.
Well, I think many critics will like what Adobe has done in SpeedGrade CC 2014.1
In this Insight, I want to give you a preview of some of the most compelling new features in this update – that way, when Adobe releases this update, (alongside other video application updates very soon) via Creative Cloud, you’ll be ready to dive right in.
The UI & Direct Link Improvements
Probably the most striking thing about the SpeedGrade CC 2014.1 update is the slightly different UI.
All the core elements of SpeedGrade are still in place, but now you’ll notice the same blue piping and highlight colors from other Adobe video apps that are also receiving updates like Premiere Pro & After Effects.
It also seems to me that fonts have been more unified. In a general sense, I think the updated UI looks great, but I wish that when some controls go gray (due to inactivity) they’d be easier to see.
A handful of UI elements have also received some love. For example, when adding a custom look layer, all of the effects are now organized into categories. The Direct Link workflow is revolutionary in my opinion, and in this update, we now get audio from a Premiere Pro sequence in a Direct Link workflow. Creating masks and tracking also seems a little quicker.
I would be a rich man if I had a dollar for every time someone asked me about the lack of curves in SpeedGrade over the past few years.
I would typically explain away the lack of curves because of SpeedGrade’s 12-way color corrector that essentially gives you the same functionality of using curves.
However, that still wasn’t good enough for a lot of people – especially those who have come to depend on curves in other applications.
Well, now not only are there RGB curves, but also a secondary Hue vs. Sat Curve.
The addition of these tools is going to make a lot of people happy.
