July 28, 2018

We discuss if professional colorists should be standardizing every project around color management systems like RCM & ACES?

From The MailBag Episode 54

To Color Manage A Project Or Not?

For the print, photo and design industries, color management is not something new.  For decades, printers have profiled their monitors and then profiled their printers – to not only get the most accurate results but to minimize mistakes and streamline their workflows.

Color management, however, is something that is pretty new to video postproduction tools.  In DaVinci Resolve there are three color management approaches that we can use – ACES (Academy Color Encoding Specification), DaVinci YRGB Color Managed – often called RCM for short, and finally, DaVinci YRGB (the normal operating mode) where YOU are the color management system!

In this installment of From The Mailbag, we got a great series of questions from Mixing Light member, Rich, about using color management schemes in DaVinci Resolve.  Here’s the gist of his questions:

‘As an industry (and also for my own work) should we be standardizing on a color management system like ACES or RCM for every project? ‘

It’s an interesting topic and in this installment of From The MailBag, we discuss if color management systems like ACES and Resolve Color Management are something that we should be using on every project or if they’re just another tool to be leveraged when appropriate to a particular project.

Surprisingly, we all had the same general attitude towards color management systems, but using color management or not, is definitely a hot-button issue in our field these days.
