The Choices For UHD/4k Monitors Are Becoming More Plentiful

Our apologies for being a couple days late with this installment of From The Mailbag.  Team Mixing Light just wrapped up the first-ever Blackmagic Design Conference + Expo.  The event was a smashing success!  A huge thanks to all the amazing instructors that joined Robbie, Patrick & Dan and a heartfelt thank you to keynote speakers Ramy Katrib & team from Digital Film Tree, and Walter Volpatto & Joseph Slomka from Fotokem Film & Video.

Just back from the event, it’s perfect timing for another installment of From The Mailbag.  In this installment, we got the following question from Mixing Light member Anton:

‘HDR isn’t that important to me at the moment, but my clients (mainly in fashion) are starting to ask for 4k masters. I own a Red Helium camera and a Red Dragon so I’ve wanted a good 4k display for quite some time, but have been holding out for what FSI would come up with. They’ve announced a new monitor, but its nearly $45k!  I would love to hear what kind of setup you recommend.’

Like Anton, Team Mixing Light has been keenly looking at UHD/4k monitoring options.  Over the past couple years we’ve been ‘hacking’ LG OLED monitors to act as UHD client monitors, but there is much to be said about a true UHD/4k reference monitor vs. a consumer TV.

In this episode, we sit down to talk about the merits of UHD/4k monitoring and dive deep into the new offerings from FSI.

Due to the timing of the BMD conference, this MailBag was released after our Insight on the XM650U.  Be sure to check out that Insight.

Remember, if you have questions that you’d like to get our opinion on please use the contact form. Your question may be included in a future episode of From The Mailbag.

Your questions can be aesthetic, technical or even client related. We’d love to hear from you, and your question might make future episodes of From The MailBag.

Enjoy the Mailbag!

-Team Mixing Light

    Hello
Great discussion about clients monitor .
I have a request if you can do a video tutorial inside about : how you get your client monitor (LG…. etc) calibrated and match to your reference monitor (FSI or sony ……etc)
Since not all of us can afford FSI XM650U.
    thank you

Great question. We are slowly approaching that topic with our calibration series. The short answer: You calibrate + eyeball it. It’s called the ‘perceptual match’. But it’s rather detailed and involved… so once we’ve laid the calibration foundation in our current series we’ll be ready to move on to that series – since it builds on what we’re teaching.

    Patrick! How soon you forget!

Rami – I’ve done an an Insight on perceptual matching here https://mixinglight.com/color-tutorial/calibrating-to-match-a-quick-guide-to-perceptually-matching-two-monitors/

It could use some minor updates but the principle remains the same in both Calman and Lightspace.

DOH! I keep forgetting about that Insight. Yup, it’s all there. But we’ll also do a video-based one as well.

Great info, thank you! You guys mention consumer-grade LG monitors for UHD client monitoring. What model are you using? What would you recommend we buy if we can’t afford the XM650U ?

Edit: never mind, I found the answer in episode 36! https://mixinglight.com/color-tutorial/reference-monitors-lgs-oleds-in-the-color-suite/

Hey guys! I have a very pressing matter concerning the Online suite in our facility. We recently constructed it and have had a few cleint sessions in the room and recently noticed a fairy evident lag on our client monitor. 4L OLED by LG. Is there a way in Resolve to simply offset the audio playback by 4 frames? I don’t need it to be in sync on my GUI or Reference just the client monitor. Also we are using the Blackmagic UltraStudio 4K Extreme 3. I believe premiere and Avid have an offset control so I assumed DR would as well. (audio offset in the playout section only affects tape playout – according to the manual) Thanks in advance!

In resolve 15.2 there is a specific audio offset control.
