Wow, 2018 flew by quickly didn’t it?

As we enter 2019, we thought we’d record a Mailbag taking a look back at 2018 – our feelings on how the year went for our industry and major themes we saw. With 2019 in front of us, in this Mailbag, we also a take a look forward into 2019 and discuss some of the themes we expect in the final year of the decade.

A Look Back At 2018

2018 was an interesting year for the postproduction industry. In many ways, the industry felt a little static this year,  possibly building up for a huge 2019?

In the first part of this Mailbag, we each share our thoughts about the past year.

Dan shares his thoughts on how the parity of equipment and toolsets is making for a crowded colorist market.  Robbie expounds on the proliferation of HDR and the slightly volatile monitor market. Patrick shares the feeling that HDR is a big theme of 2018, but it’s not quite there yet for consumer displays.

Looking Forward To 2019

As we start off 2019, we’re all excited for a potentially huge year for our industry, but also very excited about what we have in store for MixingLight.com. In the second part of this Mailbag, we discuss those themes.

While not confident that HDR made it in 2018, Patrick does think 2019 will be the year of HDR – especially now that tools like Dolby Vision and HDR 10+ are available for free in many grading apps including DaVinci Resolve. Predictably, Robbie agrees with this feeling, but he’s looking forward to other HDR workflows like live HDR, transitioning existing libraries to HDR so that content creators can breath new life into older content.

As discussed in previous Mailbags, as DaVinci Resolve has grown in its user base, but also grown in its capabilities, there has been a worry about everyone becoming a ‘colorist’. We discuss Robbie’s opinion that in 2019 we’ll see Resolve users specialize in different parts of the application.

Dan is excited about a new wave of clients that want to work remotely and could care less about supervising a session in person – saving him tons of time and often tons of stress.
