Getting Started As A Colorist & How Grading Is Changing?

May 15, 2018

We've got lots of questions from members asking how to get started as a professional colorist and how has grading changed over the years?

From The MailBag Episode 50!
A Discussion Of ‘Getting Started As A Colorist’ & ‘How Grading Is Changing’

It’s hard to believe it’s taken us this long, but this installment of From The Mailbag is our 50th! We look forward to hitting the century mark much more quickly!

Because of this milestone, we thought what a better way to celebrate than to discuss two topics we’ve recently been getting a lot of questions about:

  • What’s important as you’re getting started as a colorist?
  • How did grading change since the time we started out as colorists?

The truth is, so much time is spent in learning software, vocabulary and workflows that it’s easy to forget about some of the ‘softer’ things that go into the work we all do – or aspire to do.

Clocking in at nearly 30 minutes, we obviously have thoughts on these questions and enjoy chatting about them.

If you want to add to the conversation, please use the comments below – you never know, they might help someone else!

Remember, if you have questions that you’d like to get an opinion on please use the contact form.

Your questions can be aesthetic, technical or even client related. We’d love to hear from you, and your question might make future episodes of From The MailBag.

Enjoy this 50th MailBag!

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have been struggling with some of these same questions. I have been wondering if I should just rent some cameras to get my hands on those codecs and get that experience under my belt. As always, valuable insights and inspiration.
