Grading HDR For The First Time Is Hard – Doing It Live Is Insane!

I’ve shared many of my experiences of grading HDR over the past few years- from the first time to getting set up with Dolby Vision, and I have a lot more HDR Insights planned.

Even though I’ve shared much about what I’ve learned, in private I made a lot of mistakes, and quite a few times yelled at my computer and cursed HDR grading in general.

There is certainly a large learning curve when it comes to HDR grading and being able to experiment in private (or at least with understanding clients) has played a huge role in gaining confidence when it comes to HDR grading.

Now imagine experiencing this learning curve, and doing your first HDR grade in front of a live audience – that’s the topic of this installment of From The Mailbag.

The Zunzheng/Gaiamount BIRTV Color Grading Competition

For the past few years, Mixing Light has had a wonderful relationship with Zunzheng Monitors (FSI’s manufacturing partner) and their education company Gaiamount.

Patrick, Dan and I along with other trainers/colorists like Alexis Van Hurkman, Steve Hullfish, Jeff Greenberg and dozens of well known Chinese colorists have participated in Gaimount film festivals and events all over China.  In addition to those events, each year we attend BIRTV which is a large conference like NAB and IBC.

At the past two BIRTVs, Zunzheng/Gaiamount has hosted a live color grading competition – I know…it sounds insane!

In the Mailbag, we discuss how the competition is set up and our feelings on grading ‘competitions’ in general, but this year at BIRTV there was a special twist – all of the contestants had to grade in HDR!  Of the dozen or so contestants none of them had ever graded HDR or worked with an HDR monitor, and didn’t know the first thing about setting up HDR in Resolve.

What could possibly go wrong?!  Take listen to the Mailbag to hear how it went!
