Where do we go from here? Industry pros chart a course through consolidation, AI evolution, and the changing face of post.

In December 2025, the Mixing Light community gathered for an honest look back at the year that shaped our industry – and forward to what’s coming. What emerged wasn’t just a recap of trends, but a candid conversation about survival, adaptation, and opportunity in an era of rapid transformation.

The discussion spanned from the sobering reality of post-house consolidations to the creative possibilities of AI tools, from debates over the authenticity of film emulation to practical solutions for remote workflows. Through it all, contributors Katie Hinsen, Rich Roddman, Joey D’Anna, and Neil Haugen—joined by members Tony and Kim—brought diverse perspectives that painted a full picture of where post-production stands today.

“…we had some downturns. And if [post houses had] remained independent, I think many of them would have just weathered the storm… But those that had…new shareholder commitments to uphold, were unable to do that… We have seen more and more of these high-end boutiques, either announcing closures or being close to it… We always need post and we’re always going to need post houses. But what does that actually look like in the future?”

Katie Hinsen, Technologist

Key Takeaways

  • The post-house consolidation wave that began during the streaming boom has led to closures as vertically integrated companies struggle to maintain shareholder commitments during industry downturns.
  • Machine learning and AI tools are becoming essential workflow accelerators rather than replacement threats, with professionals actively integrating solutions like ColourLab AI into their processes.
  • The rise of short-form and vertical content is reshaping production workflows and creating new opportunities for post professionals willing to adapt.
  • Film emulation debates continue – is the “film look” overdone, or does it serve authentic creative purposes when applied thoughtfully?
  • Remote workflow solutions are maturing beyond emergency measures into viable long-term business models, with tiered approaches for different budget levels.
