May 21, 2016

Get an inside look on methods and techniques a professional digital video colorist uses on a short-form fashion commercial.

Series

Recently I graded a beautiful fashion commercial so I thought it would be great to share another tale from the grading room with you guys.

I can’t share a full before and after but I can share some before and after stills and talk you through my decisions and methods!

First off let’s check out the commercial

The Commercial

GUCCI for Net-A-Porter from Trevor Wineman on Vimeo.

The commercial was shot in LA in stunning light so as soon as I got my hands on it that it had so much potential.

  • Beautiful work Dan, I love it!
Geat reminder to play with curves, I tend to forget it’s there it resolve where as in Photoshop it’s my go-to tool.. 🙂

Do you by any chance remember your grain settings?
Usually IME grain almost dies out once video is uploaded to Vimeo.. but in your example it seems crisp 🙂
Do apply extra just for web version?
I was wondering if you could share your thoughts and experience with that..

  • Extremely inspiration. Thanks Dan!

Beautiful work! Need to try work the curves more 🙂 More of these tutorials thanks!

  • I really love this Dan, excellent work. I’m always looking at photographers for inspiration and this got me thinking about colour photography work of Steven Shore, Alex Webb and Saul Leiter. You have probably heard of those guys but here is a link to their work on my pintrest https://uk.pinterest.com/urbandoned/.

🙁 I really wanted to learn more about some of these grades, a few good take aways I could implement into my workflow, but it was really just a showcase; maybe that was the intention though. Are there any tutorials in the “fashion” “brand” genre?
