This is a quick follow-up on last week’s Samsung Onyx theatrical discussion.

So far, after confirming that the LA theater chain mentioned by ChatGPT has closed, I found that the Culver Theater in Culver City has an Onyx screen—for all you Hollywood peeps. Richmond, Texas, has the only other active screen (that I can find) in the United States, and a new screen opened in Germany.

If you’re in one of those markets – get out there and let us know what you think?

Interesting tidbit: After a four-year hiatus on anything Onyx-related, the SamMobile website announced a German screen in January 2024. Then, in April, they announced a partnership with Amazon Studios, 424 Post, and Harbor for a mastering suite (scroll down for that item in Craft).

Last week, I speculated that the release of Inside Out 2 was Onyx’s last gasp. Maybe I got it precisely backward. Maybe we’re looking at the re-launch of that format?

I guess we’ll stay tuned and see how it plays out.

In the meantime, if you want to discuss this further, the comment thread from last week’s Newsletter is a good place to start.

Happy Grading!

I’ll see you next week!

Sincerely,

“Entries open from 1 May – 31 July to colourists on any grading platform. The FilmLight Colour Awards return for the fourth year in 2024 with an additional new category dedicated to rising talent. The awards, which will once again be presented at EnergaCAMERIMAGE in November, are independently judged by a panel of prominent creatives, cinematographers and colourists.” They also just announced the jury panel on the website.
