In 2014, when the three co-founders of Mixing Light were postulating how the service might evolve – we talked about Mixing Light being a platform for other post production creatives (not just the three co-founders) to share their insights, techniques, workflows, and informed-through-experience opinions.

It’s amazing to me that the Insights Library has become the platform we imagined.

But in 2026, a piece of that original mission is still missing.

We also wanted ‘Mixing Light as a platform for others’ to apply to training courses. Where Mixing Light could host self-contained training courses, external to the Insights Library, for our Contributors. We’d remove the overhead of long-term website hosting, payments, customer service, and backend course creation.

I’m couldn’t be more thrilled to announce that colorist and Mixing Light Contributor Daria Fissoun is launching a new multi-day live course – using Mixing Light as her course delivery platform.

Daria’s course started as a pursuit of the answer to a single question:

“Why is it called Lift, Gamma, and Gain — instead of just shadows, midtones, and highlights?”

The answer led Daria into the history of film stocks and telecine machines, into the physics of light and how early engineers thought about exposure, into a chain of decisions made decades ago that silently shape how we work today.

In short, her 18-month journey revealed far more answers than she bargained for.

Daria has been keeping me apprised as she prepares for a multi-day, limited-seat live event. Teaching a course built on her research into how decisions made decades ago can inform our workflows today. It’s something new that we’ve never offered at Mixing Light before. And it’s a fulfillment of a dream the original co-founders had for Mixing Light, over a decade ago.

Daria isn’t ready to share the full details. Yet.

We’ll have the full picture for you soon. Very soon.

Stay tuned!

Happy Grading!

Sincerely,

Pat Inhofer

“This episode of the Alan Smithee Round Table was recorded just after NAB Show 2026, providing hosts Scott Simmons, Katie Hinsen and Michael Kammes with an opportunity to connect the past with the future for the event and the wider industry.”

An interesting article with James Cameron. They go deep on his love of stereoscopic photography. Near the end of the conversation, he drops this:

“We are thinking about converting Aliens [to 3D], because I know now that the tools are so much better than they were for creating depth maps. We’re probably going to wind up converting Aliens, which will be a fun experience. That film seems to be evergreen. People still go back to it a lot. If people remember a movie that I did 38 years ago, I think I’ve already won [an] argument.”

For the record: Aliens is the best sequel in cinematic history. Full stop.
