Fusion Wipes Part 1 -Creating interesting pattern-based transitions

Are you looking for a fast way to create unique transitions in DaVinci Resolve? Check out gradient transitions. A gradient transition creates an image reveal by ramping through the luminance range of a gradient. The dark range of the gradient blends first, followed by the brighter ranges. What is unique about this tool is that the gradient can be ramped, reshaped, and morphed endlessly, creating fast and cool results in the Fusion page.

Follow me in this tutorial, and you’ll learn how to build 10 different-looking gradient transitions on the Fusion page using the simple preset Fusion Cross Dissolve as a starting point. Building these transitions in the Fusion page offers greater flexibility to customize and adjust your work, whereas the Edit page presets can be stubbornly limited. We will also explore how to read the histogram and modify contrast levels to alter ramp falloffs.

Key takeaways from this Insight

By the end of this Insight, you should understand how to:

  • Convert Edit Page Cross Dissolves to Fusion Cross Dissolves
  • Ungroup ungroups within Fusion
  • Convert Cross Dissolves to Gradient Wipes
  • Create masks from Gradient ramps
  • Add multi-color borders to custom ramp shapes
  • Create a venetian blind style wipe pattern
  • Create a clock-wipe style transition
  • Use the Fastnoise node to create randomly generated fluid transitions
  • Use the Mosaic Blue tool to create a hexagon reveal pattern with offsets
  • Deconstruct existing 3D shaders for inspiration and experimentation
  • Create gradient wipe patterns out of existing images
