From The Publisher
The Super Bowl as a game was disappointing. The halftime show was not aimed at me, but having reached escape velocity of the 18-34 demo almost three decades ago, that’s not surprising.

The commercials played better linearly than they looked embedded on a roundup web page.

This week, your Newsletter Publisher also entered the last year of his 50’s – which is weird to read.

And I think football took some air out of the rest of the internet since I got through my stories pretty quickly.

Let’s get to the Newsletter. I’ll see you next Sunday.

Happy Grading!

Sincerely,

(video) Marc Wielage sent this link, commenting that this video was burning up the forums. At the time of this snip, it has 1.7 million views and 87K likes.

I disagree with the video’s conclusions. And I vehemently disagree that the talent doesn’t exist for the looks that this creator prefers – as he asserts (while pointing out several big-budget, popular, modern feature films that look amazing). But given this video’s widespread awareness, I think Newsletter readers should be aware of this conversation and be prepared with their thoughts should a client or peer bring it up.

FWIW, one of the filmmaking techniques he loves, I find annoying and conspicuous since it is rarely done tastefully and almost always calls attention to the filmmaking: the streak of light crossing across the eyes in a near-black image. There’s a name for this technique, but it escapes me now.
I enjoyed reading this Q&A and recommend it, especially in regard to their collaboration and end goals.
“In this multi-part blog series, we take you behind the scenes of our system that processes billions of impressions daily. We will explore the challenges we encounter and unveil how we are building a resilient solution that transforms these client-side impressions into a personalized content discovery experience for every Netflix viewer.”

And yet, all I seem to get recommended to me is content based on what I just watched – not what I want to watch next. But still, an interesting read if this sort of craftsmanship interests you.
“Well, in time for Valentine’s Day, I can share the results of some new research I have conducted into the changing role of romance in movies…”
