Building Looks And Finishing A Music Video Shot On The Panasonic GH5

Happy New Year and welcome back to my grading suite!

My favourite thing to talk about here on Mixing Light is real-world jobs that I’ve graded and I have an extra special Insight for you.

We’ll be looking at how I graded this music video for the wonderful Daniel Broadley

This video was shot on the GH5 as a one-take so it gives me a great opportunity to show one of the most common questions I come across:

How do I deal with compressed formats such as the GH5, S1H, A7s etc?

I actually LOVE grading Panasonic footage. Especially from the s1h as it records in 10 bit. In a future Insight you’ll learn how I graded a live concert film shot across 9 cameras that included 3 Alexa’s and 6 GH5s!

In this Insight, we are going to take a look at:

  • Building a “Show Look”
  • Colour Pipeline And Grade Management in Baselight
  • Boost Contrast
  • Boost Colour
  • Texture Highlight
  • Texture Equaliser
  • Quickly Adding Dissolves Between Grades

Comments Please!

I’m always extra excited to read comments on these Insights as I can make sure to cover any questions in the next part.

-Dan

Great insight Dan. Good to see baselight being used. I’m going to filmlight in the new year to learn baselight so keen to see this kind of stuff. šŸ‘

Thanks! It’s great fun. It takes a bit of mental gymnastics to learn things the Baselight way after being Resolve for so long, but I’ve been working on Baselight about 18 months now and find it so fast and enjoyable to grade on.
