When Perspective Fails: Understand When Translation, Rotation, and Shear Are Enough

Have you ever wondered why your planar track works perfectly in one shot but wobbles in another? The secret lies in understanding motion types—and knowing when you can “get away” with less than full perspective tracking.

In this Mixing Light short, Bernd Klimm demystifies the different movement types available in planar tracking, from the basics of Translation, Rotation, and Scale (TRS) to the more complex Affine transformation, all the way to full Perspective motion. Using synthetic examples that isolate each motion type, you’ll see exactly what each tracking mode can—and can’t—handle.

In practice, you never have such simple movement… However, you also don’t always really have full perspective movement. [Your subject is often] further away from the camera… So very often you get away with much less than full perspective [tracking].

Choosing the Motion Type in Resolve Fusion's Planar Tracker.
It’s not immediately clear which ‘Motion Type’ you should choose in Resolve Fusion’s PlanarTracker.

Key Takeaways

  • Translation, Rotation, and Scale (TRS) can be tracked with two-point tracking for basic movements.
  • Affine transformation (TRS + Shear) handles horizontal and vertical camera tracks effectively.
  • Full Perspective is required when the camera moves toward or away from the tracked plane (think: dolly moves).
  • Easily verify your tracks by switching to steady mode to reveal any residual movement or wobble.
  • Real-world footage rarely requires full perspective—often, simpler tracking modes yield better results.
