LUT Limitation

LUT Limitation – The Best Of Both Worlds

November 3, 2015

The main pain when working with LUTs is not knowing exactly what they are doing. Dan shares his technique of LUT Limitation.

As the captain of negativity when it comes to working with LUTs I have good news for once. After some experimentation, I stumbled upon the idea of LUT limitation and it seems to work!

I had a great week grading and after working on another job where using a LUT would have been useful but I was afraid to use them I took another stab at using them.

The idea and technique is simple and effective but I have to admit I never thought about it until this week.

Check out my video below and try it for your self!

This won’t make everyone happy but I think it’s worth having in the back of your mind just in case!

Enjoy!

– Dan

  • Great idea! I attempted a similar approach on that project i got “stuck” on, but wasn’t entirely successful. It ALMOST worked but the part I reversed (too much teal in the mid shadows) was just too much of the look to be “removed” without looking strange (as you mentioned). Likely limited to this specific project and Ill be try this on future projects before “throwing it out” . Thanks!!

PS – That TalkTalk chart sure has been useful.

  • Great Insight Dan. I have to ask – how the hell have you managed to get your LUTs organised into parent folders in your LUT list? Even if I put mine inside of parent folders on my hard drive they always end up in one giant list inside of Resolve.

    Thanks!

    Kraig.

    Hey Kraig!

I just made lots of parent folders. As you said folders within folders doesn’t work so well so I break up the folders that the LUTs come in and then make my own folders like. Koji_Alexa, Koji_RED etc..

Takes a few minutes to do but makes it so much easier!

  • Only just noticed this reply! Thanks man, I’ll give it a try 🙂

  • Hey Dan! What LUT-package do you mostly use? I have the Impulz kit, but thinking about the Koji color packing… any recommendations? Thanks!
