The last two weeks I’ve found myself on an unplanned sabbatical. As a result I’m a bit behind in publishing Insights. They’ll start flowing again this week.

The last 10 days have also been busy in our industry, with NAB 2025. So this Newsletter is jam-packed. And there is spill-over for next week.

What about Resolve 20 Public Beta?

I’ve got you covered in the Tools section. On the Mixing Light website, it’ll take a little while for those Insights to roll. Our philosophy has always been it takes more than one or two jobs to figure out new tools, new workflows.

When new features are introduced, on social media channels they’re always AMAZING! and INCREDIBLE!, not to mention !KILLER!.

But then, after a few jobs, you realize they don’t quite work like you thought. Or that there are some workflows or types of images that they excel at – and other times that they fail.

Magic Mask is one good example. I was impressed when it was initially released a few years ago. But after failing more often than it worked, I abandoned it. And so did many other colorists.

Then, two weeks ago, on a job, I gave Magic Mask another spin in  Resolve 19.1.4 and was floored at how much better (and faster) it worked. Yet, it still has rough edges (pun intended). And that’ll be one of the first updated tools I’ll be testing in Resolve 20.

I hope to turn this experience into an Insight.

But for a quick NAB 2025 fix, we have an Office Hours happening this Wed. at noon, Eastern.

Full details here. I hope you’ll join Daria Fussion, Joey D’Anna, Katie Hinsen, and perhaps one or two more Contributors as we talk about what they found, learned, and (in some cases) taught on the show floor.

That’s all for now.

I’ll see you next Sunday.

Happy Grading!

Sincerely,

Pat Inhofer

In short… how do we save Hollywood?”
