Are You Leveling Up Your Skills with DaVinci Resolve 14?

(and maybe also want to get Certified by Blackmagic?)

Do you feel like you’re missing out on key DaVinci Resolve features?

If you’re constantly haunting forums or searching the internet for answers to your Resolve questions, then maybe it’s time to sit down and intentionally ‘level-up’ your skill?

Because at version 14, DaVinci Resolve is a really deep app. And it’s hard to know what’s important to learn, right away, versus what’s nice-to-know – if you’re learning it on your own?

Let Mixing Light prioritize what you need to know, and present it to you in a layered approach – across two complete sets of DaVinci Resolve 14 tutorials (each, with its own set of downloaded training movies, project files, and follow-along media).

DaVinci Resolve 14 Certification Tutorial Series

This Introduction to DaVinci Resolve 14 series is (2) self-contained courses for download. They’re designed to get you confident on DaVinci Resolve. And the series is built around Blackmagic’s educational training program.

2 Tutorial Courses + 1 Practice Project =
1 Comprehensive Bundle

Part 1: The DaVinci Resolve 14 QuickStart

This QuickStart is designed to get you going on DaVinci Resolve as quickly as possible. You develop key skills, learn key features, and build a solid foundation for continuing your education in Part 2 of this Series.

  • 62 individual movies, 5.4 hours
  • First, build a :60 second rough cut, with light color correction, mixing, and render for upload to Vimeo
  • Then, learn the fundamentals of non-linear editing
  • Decode waveform and vectorscope displays (and use them for image analysis)
  • Explore the key Color Page tools, features, and options
  • Learn the fundamentals of the Fairlight page
  • Understand basic render options

At the end of the QuickStart you have a solid foundation and are prepared to continue learning in the Add-On Certification Course.

Course Details:
- 62 movies
- 5 hours 25 minutes
- Exercise Files: 1.54GB

Part 2: The DaVinci Resolve 14 Add-On Certification Course

After completing the QuickStart, level up your Resolve skills with the Add-On Course.

  • 117 individual movies, 8.3 hours
  • Get hands-on with multicam editing (includes 11 cameras for you to sync together and start editing)
  • Learn advanced editing techniques and shortcuts
  • Understand and execute Primary and Secondary color corrections
  • Start building more advanced node trees in the Color page
  • Get an introduction to Resolve Color Management
  • Learn how to use the Media Manager for archiving and trimming your projects

At the end of this Course you’re also fully prepared to take Blackmagic’s ‘Introduction to DaVinci Resolve 14 Assessment Test’.

Course Details:
- 117 movies
- 8 hours 22 minutes
- Exercise Files: 3.8GB

Fusion Page from DaVinci Resolve 15 Public Beta
DaVinci Resolve 15 adds whole new feature sets, increasing its complexity. We recommend learning on Resolve 14, which is more mature and preps you for future learning.

Get prepped (for Resolve’s future)

This course also prepares you for when DaVinci Resolve 15 comes out of Public Beta. Why don’t we want you to jump into the DaVinci Resolve 15 Public Beta right now? Because how do you tell the difference if you’re making a mistake, or if the software feature you’re using isn’t fully implemented (or is broken)? Learning new tools on Beta software is a setup for frustration and abandonment.

Instead, we recommend you use the most recent version of the stable, battle-tested DaVinci Resolve 14. Because when Resolve 15.1 is finally released, you’ll understand the core elements of Resolve, which stay consistent for many many years. Enjoy a much more pleasant learning experience using the more mature v14 software release (note: we recorded with Resolve 14.3).

Bundled Color Correction Practice Project:
In The Shadow Of Giants

Our courses always include footage for you to follow along. But because the projects are licensed from filmmakers, we have to charge extra. To save you money on this Series, we’ve made one of the projects – used in Part 2 of this course – optional. But this bundle includes that optional project.

This Bundle includes everything you need to completely follow-along with this Series!

Get Mixing Light’s documentary Color Correction Practice Project, In The Shadow of Giants, at an unbeatable bundled price. You save significantly over purchasing separately – with the comfort of knowing there’s nothing else needed for a completely self-contained training experience:

This Practice Project is an 11-minute documentary that offers you everything you need to really test and hone your Color Page skills after you’ve completed your two DaVinci Resolve 14 Courses:

  • Shot match 4 different cameras (C100, OSMO, Blackmagic Cinema Camera, Canon5DmkII)
  • 1080p @ 23.976
  • Source footage is all camera original

You Have More Training Options Than Ever.

Don’t repeat our mistakes

We make mistakes. Usually with clients sitting next to us (often with hard deadlines hanging over us). Learn techniques and workflows to avoid our mistakes and make working in DaVinci Resolve much easier to execute.

We speak ‘DaVinci Resolve’ (in a way you can understand)

Having hearts of teachers, Team Mixing Light knows how to explain working in DaVinci Resolve in plain language. This training is the culmination of our careers. Patrick, your teacher on this title, doesn’t hold back any tips or tricks. If he thinks some kernel of truth is essential to teach you – it gets taught.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to do the QuickStart if I want to take Blackmagic’s Certification Assessment Test?
Yes. Neither Course alone fully prepares you for the test. The QuickStart is offered for free on this website, to get newcomers familiar with DaVinci Resolve. The Certification Add-On builds upon the QuickStart foundation for a comprehensive introduction as specified by Blackmagic Design’s educational program.

Why isn’t this Course using Resolve 15?
BlackMagic has not yet provided an assessment test for Resolve 15.
Plus, Resolve 15 is in Public Beta and we strongly believe that new users should NOT be learning on Beta software. Because if the software crashes or tools don’t work as expected, they don’t know if it’s a problem with the software or them!

Is the QuickStart Course the same course as the Lynda / LinkedIn ‘Getting Started with Resolve 14’ Course?
Yes. Some of Mixing Light’s training is licensed to Lynda / LinkedIn. Mixing Light’s free DaVinci Resolve 14 QuickStart is identical to that Course. If you’re one of their members and have completed that course, our QuickStart is functionally identical (with the exception of a few introductory and concluding movies). If you’ve completed the course on their website, you can proceed directly to the Certification Add-On course.

Can what I learn in this Course be carried forward to Resolve 15?
Of course. These are all fundamental concepts being taught (with a few advanced ‘candy’ features dropped in for fun). Most of the concepts carry back to older versions of Resolve and will carry forward to many future versions of Resolve.

What’s the deal with this Certification thing?
Mixing Light is an official Blackmagic Training Partner. The DaVinci Resolve 14 QuickStart course and our DaVinci Resolve 14 Certification Add-On combine to form our official Introduction to DaVinci Resolve 14 series. This series is designed to specifically prepare you to take the official Blackmagic Assessment Test for Blackmagic certification.

As a training partner Blackmagic specifies to us all the concepts we need to teach you to pass that Assessment. We believe this online Course is the first online offering designed around the specific requirements of Blackmagic’s educational training program.

Is the Certification Add-On course also on Lynda / LinkedIn?
No. Part 2 of this Certification Series is available exclusively on Mixing Light. Currently, there are no plans to license it to any 3rd parties and the only place you’ll find this full Certification Series is here on Mixing Light.
