Overview of OpenFX Film Convert Plug In

This Insight features a new concept for DaVinci Resolve colorists . . . plug-ins.

And for this colorist, OpenFX support was the one HUGE feature that was released in Resolve 10 most likely to have a big impact on the services I offer my clients. If I choose, I can start using these plug-ins to go beyond are normal, magical, color grading tasks and into the realm of special effects.

Along these lines, this is the first of two Insights to introduce MixingLight members to FilmConvert, a ‘film emulation’ plug-in.

FimConvert: More than just a LUT
FilmConvert isn’t just a LUT profiled from a bunch of different film stocks. It consists of three components:

  • Camera Profiles
  • Film Stock Profiles
  • Film Grain Profiles

When you apply FilmConvert to a shot, you’re generally making three choices: Selecting the camera that shot the footage, selecting the film stock you want to emulate and adjusting the film grain to taste.

FilmConvert comes with a large selection of Camera Packs that are supposed to produce more accurate results, but which you’ll need to download and install individually. And these Camera Packs can be rather large, in the 300-500MB range.

A 2-Part Review
In this Insight I’ll walk you through the various pull-downs and sliders in FilmConvert and how to find and download Camera Packs. In Part 2 we’ll see how I’d use FilmConvert on RED footage and offer up some initial impressions about this plug-in.
