Episode 7: From the Mailbag

We’re back with our first Mail Bag Episode of the new year.  Towards the end of last year we got a ton of questions and fodder for our Mail Bag series – Thank You. We’ve just recorded a whole bunch of episodes that we’ll be releasing over the next few weeks.

Remember, if you have questions that you’d like to get an opinion on please use the contact form. Your questions can be aesthetic, technical or even client related. We’d love to hear from you, and your question might make future episodes of From the Mailbag.

Per usual, we cover two different topics in this Episode:

Looking Forward to 2014
First up, we want to share with you our members some of our plans for 2014 and offer a HUGE thank you for being a Mixing Light Member.  We have a lot of very exciting things going on in 2014 including:

  • New ways to communicate with and let you know new insights have been posted.
  • Google Hangout (or similar) themed get-togethers so Team Mixing Light and occasionally our contributors can answer questions and discuss topics in more interactive way.
  • Details on our NAB Plans including our 2nd annual colorist meet up.
  • And more!!

Grading a 20min Film, Shot as a Single Long Take, Navigating 3 Floors
Next, we got an interesting question from Mixing Light member Stuart about how to approach grading a 20min film that was shot using a stedicam and the entire film was shot in 1 take!  Pheww…talk about preproduction.  We discuss a few different approaches to grading a project like this including using “hidden” cuts, dissolves and dynamics (keyframes).

Enjoy!
